Description:

Purpose The purpose of the course was to enhance the knowledge about child protection in conflict and emergencies and to provide participants specific tools to contribute to a more child-focused effort in humanitarian actions, and to enable the participants to better perform child protection in their field work. Objective The objectives of the training were: * To present relevant international law protecting children in emergencies * To present an overview recent trends and global developments around Child Protection in Emergencies. * Discuss the importance of reporting and monitoring on violations against children’s rights in armed conflict and emergencies. * To provide a framework for situation analysis and program planning. * Illustrate good practices from programs on child protection in emergencies. Content and method This training was based on many practical exercises mixed with theory and legal frameworks and required active participants. Specially selected resource persons with expertise in the area, and experience in working with child protection in the field, conducted the training. Participants should possess a knowledge base from ATHA or equivalent. This training was held in collaboration with Save the Children About Save the Children Save the Children is the world’s largest independent global movement for children. Save the Children consists of 27 member organizations working together to improve children’s lives in over 110 countries with over 10 000 staff. Save the Children fights for children's rights. It delivers immediate and lasting improvements to children’s lives worldwide. Children arguably suffer the most from conflict and natural disasters. They often lose homes and family members. They become ill, yet don’t have access to the necessary health care. When schools are destroyed or closed, children are also denied opportunities for mental and social development. Save the Children focuses on support and protection for children caught up in conflict or emergencies by: * providing health services and other essentials such as food, fuel and shelter to the most vulnerable children and their families * working with and supporting children exposed to violence * working to prevent child soldiering and to help those who have direct experience of fighting * raising local awareness of the short and long-term dangers of landmines, which kill indiscriminately - often for years after a conflict has ended * caring for children who have become separated from their families and reuniting them as quickly as possible Save the Children spends nearly 450 million USD per year on emergency response programs.
